The Bedales Chair

Specially created and engraved for the Bedales Auction

Courtesy of Hugo Burge

www.lawrencenealchairs.co.uk

Old Bedalian Hugo Burge has kindly commissioned and donated this special edition rush-seated chair, carved intricately with the iconic Bedales bee. This marking, which makes this item the only one of its kind, recognises the chair’s remarkable 100 year heritage in the Memorial Library at Bedales School.

Hugo fell in love with the Bedales Library and its chairs during his school days and first started his own collection in 1994. He recently produced a short film, The Chair Maker, about craftsman Lawrence Neal who makes the ladderback, rush-seated chairs. Watch video

Lawrence left school at fifteen to be apprenticed to his father and has spent his whole life making chairs, in a 100 year tradition passed down from Ernest Gimson, who designed the Bedales Library. The accumulated knowledge of this highly skilled process is now being passed on to a sixth generation, thanks to the help of the Heritage Crafts Association finding apprentices who, supported by Hugo, will start a new chapter in 2020 at The Marchmont Workshop, in Berwickshire.

By bidding for this chair, you are not only helping to broaden access to a Bedales education, you are recognising the value and heritage of traditional crafts, and supporting the makers as they continue to produce these historically-resonant and beautiful objects.

Gourmet Kraut and Hot Sauce Hamper

A selection of delicious krauts and fermented hot sauces

Courtesy of Lucy Ogilvie-Grant

A selection of Lucy’s delicious kraut and fermented hot sauces to enjoy at home.

Bedales parent Lucy Ogilvie-Grant studied at The London Fermentary where she learned to make delicious, healthy and nutritious fermented foods and sauces. Preserving food by fermentation is nothing new: cheese, sauerkraut, kimchi, sourdough bread and kombucha have been prepared this way for thousands of years.

Research into the health benefits is ongoing but what is known is that diet is one of the main influences on the human gut microbiota and that good food-ingested bacteria can be found in large numbers in fermented foods. It’s generally agreed that consuming a wide-range of naturally produced cultured foods is beneficial for health and wellbeing.

Award Winning Gin

2 bottles of Hawthorn’s Gin paired with The Gin Dictionary

Courtesy of Hawthorn’s Gin

Sample this beautifully crafted, citrusy London Dry Gin and read up on your tipple in bestselling book The Gin Dictionary.

Founders Nick Masters and Will Turnage ran a vodka business together for 15 years. When Will’s World War 2 hero grandfather passed away, Will came across his old wartime diary and, in it, a secret gin recipe. He smuggled his gin on board and shared it with his crew to boost morale. Nick and Will have borrowed his wartime recipe and created Hawthorn’s Gin. Staying true to traditional hand-crafted methods, Hawthorn’s is distilled from 100% English wheat in a vintage copper pot still. It makes a cracking G&T and is smooth enough to be drunk neat. It also makes an ideal base for your favourite cocktail.

The Gin Dictionary is the gin-drinker’s guide to this special spirit. With hundreds of entries covering everything from history, ingredients and distilling techniques to flavour notes, award-winning gin expert David T. Smith explores the key factors behind your drink.

Colour Analysis Consultation

With Alexandra Eno, Style Consultant at The Eno Edit

The Eno Edit

Alexandra is a Style Consultant based in Petersfield. She is kindly offering a 3-hour Colour Analysis consultation.

Do you ever wonder why some colours make your eyes sparkle whilst others drain the colour from your face? Or do you have a wardrobe full of clothes but have trouble putting outfits together because not many match? Perhaps your wardrobe is full of black and you would like to add some colour but are not sure where to start? If you have answered ‘yes’ to any of these, this session is for you.

Colour Analysis takes in to account your hair colour, eyes and skin tone to find the colours that work with you to give you a natural healthy glow. Each colour will be hand-picked to produce your own unique palette of colours to ensure that people see you, not just the clothes you are in.

The session will also address any queries you may have regarding your hair colour, give you tips on what type of jewellery will complement your colours and show you which make up will enhance your natural appearance should you choose to wear it, including finding that elusive perfect lipstick!

After the session you will be sent a colour wallet to keep plus a comprehensive hand-out about your colour profile. This contains detailed information on which colour combinations work, ideas of what to buy in your new colours, advice on putting together a capsule wardrobe, make-up, hair and accessories suggestions and a post analysis action plan to help you make the most of your session.

Date to be arranged with Alexandra Eno.
